GP-QAT Subcollection

By Dr. Patrícia Melchionna Albuquerque

Microbiological collections play a fundamental role in the conservation and utilization of the genetic and metabolic diversity of microorganisms, directly contributing to biodiversity preservation and the advancement of biotechnology.

The biological material maintained in these collections constitutes essential raw material for the development of biotechnological products, driving the regional and national bioeconomy.

More than repositories of microorganisms, microbiological collections support research, teaching, and specialized services, while also housing samples of historical, scientific, and economic significance that form part of the innovation infrastructure of the Amazon region.

The subcollection of the Microbiological Collections Center (CCM/UEA), affiliated with the School of Technology (EST) and the Applied Chemistry to Technology Research Group (QAT), was established in 2008 as a working collection and currently houses a significant collection of more than 1,200 filamentous fungi. These specimens were isolated from various Amazonian substrates originating from a region that remains relatively unexplored in terms of its microbiological potential.

The CCM/UEA is duly registered with the National System for the Management of Genetic Heritage and Associated Traditional Knowledge (SISGEN), under registration number C011AE4.

Most Frequently Occurring Fungi in the CCM/UEA:

Genera Penicillium, Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Colletotrichum

CCM/UEA Deposits:

The CCM/UEA fulfills requests for culture supply, fungal isolation and identification, as well as accepting deposits.
