Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory - C38

The Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory of the Research Group on Chemistry Applied to Technology (GP-QAT) at the University of the State of Amazonas (UEA) is one of the main experimental units of the Amazonas Chemical Analysis Center (CAQQAT/UEA), serving as a core facility for analytical support and academic training in research, teaching, and extension activities in the fields of environmental, analytical, and technological chemistry.

The Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory is dedicated to the preparation, treatment, and analysis of water, soil, sediment, effluent, and biota samples, serving as a fundamental stage in laboratory procedures prior to instrumental determinations using equipment such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, CHNS-O, TOC/TN, GC-MS, and HPLC. It is equipped with fume hoods, block and microwave digestion systems, Type I and Type II water purification systems, analytical balances, laboratory ovens, stirrers, ultrasonic baths, and centrifuges, as well as all the infrastructure required for the safe handling of reagents and preparation of standard solutions.

Within the Amazonas State Water, Air and Soil Quality Monitoring Program (ProQAS/AM), the Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory plays an essential role in acid digestion, filtration, preservation, and compound extraction for subsequent instrumental analysis. Its procedures follow quality control protocols based on ABNT, US EPA, and APHA standards, ensuring the traceability and reliability of analytical results.

In addition to supporting institutional projects, the laboratory is widely used for the training of undergraduate and graduate students, technical personnel, and the development of analytical methodologies adapted to Amazonian conditions—including the determination of trace metals, nutrients, organic carbon, chlorides, and volatile organic compounds in different types of Amazonian waters, including blackwater, whitewater, and clearwater systems.

The GP-QAT/UEA Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory has therefore established itself as a center of excellence in chemistry applied to Amazonian sustainability, contributing to scientific advancement, the strengthening of environmental monitoring networks, and the generation of knowledge to support the management and conservation of natural resources in the State of Amazonas.
